Historical Committee (H.C.)
Topic A: Italian Constitutional Commission Rebuilding Italy (1946)
Following the fall of Fascism and the end of World War II, Italy faced the critical task of rebuilding its political system. In 1946, the Italian Constitutional Commission was established to draft a new democratic constitution for the Republic of Italy. The commission included representatives from a range of political parties and ideologies, who worked to balance regional interests, civil liberties, and democratic principles while addressing the legacy of authoritarian rule.
As the Historical Committee, delegates will explore the challenges faced by the Constitutional Commission, including debates over the separation of powers, the role of the monarchy, and protections for fundamental rights. The committee will discuss how the decisions of 1946 shaped Italy’s modern political system and the broader process of post-war democratization in Europe.
Meet the Chairs
This year’s chairs bring expertise in European history, constitutional law, and post-war political transitions. They are eager to guide delegates through a nuanced discussion of the Italian Constitutional Commission and its historical significance.
